Find out more about work-based learning

The Professionalisation Contract is certainly one of the most useful solutions for the company manager, who wishes to recruit without having to assume the considerable financial responsibility of an open-ended employment contract.

Most categories of companies are eligible for this type of contract, whether they operate in the commercial or industrial sector.

Work-based learning - both in the company and in the educational institution.

Time is hence divided between an operational presence in the company and trips to and from "the school benches"! The term "work-based learning" comes from this type of contract - the student going to and from the educational institution and the company.

The content of the tuition can be both theoretical and practical, and there are also more generalized lessons.

Age limit :When you turn 26, it will be too late to enjoy the benefits of these contracts! You must have finished the first cycle of secondary education.

Duration: The contracts last 1-2 years in general.

Advantage: The company who hosts the beneficiary of the contract is exonerated from employer's social security and wage contributions for the duration of the contract. Please note that the older you are, the less attractive it is for the employer to take you on.

Status: Your contract must be registered at the Labour Offices. In this regard, you enjoy the same regime as other employees.

Trial period:As with every fixed-term contract, there is a trial period. If this trial period proves inconclusive, if your "alarm clock breaks down" a few times too often or if you make a serious mistake, the company can break the contract during the first two months.

Costs : The student pays nothing (except the application and registration fees). Authorities and tax on professional training, paid each year by the companies, provide the costs for the training in the school.

Salary: Your pay is a fraction of the minimum wage, which depends on your age and the level of the diploma you are preparing.

Up to the BACAfter the Bac
21 years old or younger55 % of the minimum wage65 % of the minimum wage
21 years old or older70 % of the minimum wage80 % of the minimum wage

The financial advantages which go hand in hand with a Professionalisation Contract are considerable:

Exemption from payroll taxes (for a company with at least 10 employees or entered in the crafts register)

OPCA looks after training fees with direct payment to the Education Centre (No advance payments)

Finally, 1525 euros to support the functions of the tutor.
